Can you cope with the cold this winter?
Keep your home safe from frost damage by following some simple advice
To help our customers prepare for the winter we at Dale & Valley Homes has put together this advice. You do not have to live in one of our properties to benefit from the tips.
Avoiding burst pipes
Leave your central heating on constant at a lower temperature so your home does not drop below freezing. Remove the loft hatch to allow warm air to get into the loft and keep doors open so warmth can circulate around the house.
Open the doors to the sink unit to allow warmer air to circulate round the pipes.
If your home will be empty during the cold spell, ask a friend or neighbour to go in and turn the heating on for a short time.
Most frozen pipes are found in the roof space and below sink units. If you discover a frozen pipe, it is best to thaw it out slowly by putting hot-water bottles or a towel soaked in warm water on the frozen area.
What do I do if the pipes have frozen?
If the water in your pipes has frozen the expansion of the water
could cause the pipe to burst, leading to thawed water leaking
from the break. Turn off the main stop tap. You should find
this under the kitchen sink or where the service pipe enters your home. If you have a cold water tank, turn off the stopcock protect your possessions.
Thaw the pipe slowly. First, open the tap nearest to the part of the pipe you think is frozen then melt the ice using a hot water bottle.
Dealing with condensation
Condensation is caused by moisture or steam produced by cooking, washing or drying laundry indoors. The moist air turns to water on cool surfaces such as walls, tiles and windows. Moist air rises and often ends up on ceilings and in upstairs rooms, causing mould. To avoid condensation open the window or use your extractor fan when cooking, running a bath or taking a shower.
Keep air circulating all the time.
Avoid drying laundry on radiators and vent your tumble dryer outside.
Do not use bottled gas heaters.
If mould forms what can I do?
Wipe the mould off immediately using water only before applying a special solution to the wall. You can get this from a DIY store.
