Constitution for Residents Associations

A constitution is a formal document which sets out guidelines that a group must follow.  To receive full support from Dale & Valley Homes a residents' association's constitution must follow the template constitution developed by the customer involvement team.

Constitutions can be adapted to suit an individual residents' association but this should be discussed with the customer insight team, who will be happy to help.  A group does not have to have a constitution but could operate as an informal residents' association without one.

Usually a constitution will contain information about the following:

  • aims and objectives of the group
  • equal opportunities
  • who can join the group
  • committee members and their roles
  • how meetings should be run
  • how the money is looked after
  • how to make changes to the constitution

Included within the constitution are another three supporting documents: the code of conduct for recognised residents associations; residents' association standing orders; and residents' association criteria. These three documents support the constitution and include important requirements that a residents' associations must meet.

To see an example of a constitution, which includes all three supporting documents, please see the downloadable example constitution.
